work, struggle, celebrate, hope, disappointment, reclamation, heart.

the dress zukhra had chosen to wear to her senior prom had been selected months before anyone would ever imagine there would be no prom this year.

even as the weeks went by and as the pandemic still found a way to create a suspension of time, there was hope that some semblance of a celebration would take place.

we took these photos in may, zukhra, her mother, allison, and i.

we’d all been reeling from the constant, shifting forecasts of what reality would become. this seemed the perfect chance to own the rhythm and snatch some of it back for these two very dear friends and neighbors.

today, the news came that there, indeed, would be no prom.

yet, here we were, and so here we are.

there is no reason to not keep hoping. there is alway a reason to celebrate, even if it is only for yourself and the ocean.
